Bannerman Castle

"This abandoned castle in the Hudson River Valley near Cold Spring was built on the uninhabited Pollepel Island in 1901 by Scottish immigrant Frank Bannerman. Bannerman owned a military surplus supply company but his Brooklyn store could not hold his entire arsenal, so he decided to design a replica of the castles like those in his homeland to store the extra ammunition. After 200 tons of shells explored in 1920, the castle was left partially in ruins. Today, visitors can see the outside of Bannerman Castle up close (it’s dangerous to walk inside) by taking a passenger boat around the island, or by traveling with a tour by canoe or kayak." The Bar Room at the Beekman Hotel

"Everyone does it. They can't resist. They walk in and they look up. Rising above them like some white-railinged, unfolding-accordion, time-warp tableau from Christopher Nolan's Inception, the atrium of this Financial District showpiece practically dares you not to Instagram it. But the bar would be nothing more than a pretty view were it not for the attention to detail at ground level. Service is spot-on, and the drinks, courtesy of chef Tom Colicchio's team, twist the classics just enough that they never slide into grandpa-in-a-tracksuit garishness. Nurse your Luigi Ferrarese and marvel at your good fortune while Edgar Allan Poe gazes mournfully from the eastern wall. " [Esquire]

Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area

"This National Heritage Area spans from New York City to Albany and is full of scenic parks, outdoor recreation, and plenty of history. Historians may want to visit one of the many historic sites or museums such as the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, while outdoor enthusiasts may prefer rock climbing in the Shawnagunks or hiking in the Catskills. The Hudson River Valley also boasts farmers markets, upscale restaurants, and impressive art and sculpture exhibitions." [Travel+Leisure]
